Youth Ministry for High School Service Opportunities
One of the goals of our program is to provide opportunities for awareness of and sharing in the church’s active concern for those who suffer from poverty, handicaps, and injustice. To promote this awareness, we encourage participation in different activities available as a group or as an individual.
Each Small Christian Community participates in two group service projects per year. One is our Harvest Sunday Food Collection. The food and monies that are collected are given to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Naperville . Harvest Sunday is done over two weeks. The first week, which takes place the last weekend of April, is for flyer distribution. The second week takes place the first Sunday in May and is for the actual food collection. The second group service project is determined by the SCC group itself and done sometime during the year.
An example of an SCC group service project might be to go on the SLURPEE Mission Day which is held on the third Saturday of the month. The kids travel to Hopkins Park just east of Kankakee about two hours from Naperville . It is an extremely poor rural area. There they help reconstruct the Rehoboth Retreat Center and do some community work.
At other times during the year, service hours may be requested to fulfill a make-up lesson requirement. Service hours must be performed during the current school year unless you have to do service to receive credit for the year in a SCC group in which case these hours can be done over the summer. Some examples of recognized organizations for service are Hospitals, Special Olympics, St. Raphael Church, Loaves and Fishes, and Nursing Homes. Babysitting and volunteering as timekeepers for sports games are usually not acceptable. If you aren’t sure if an organization is acceptable, contact the Youth Ministry office. Be sure to obtain signatures from the supervisor at these organizations where you volunteer. Parents’ signatures as a rule do not qualify as supervisor acknowledgement.
If you have any questions, please contact the YM Office via phone 630-355-4545 X-143 or via email to Susan or Barry.
