The middle school youth will develop a deeper appreciation for all aspects of human life and they will also learn that their actions now, as middle school youth, can affect their relationships in the future.
OPERATION RICE BOWL
Catholic Relief Services
For our 2010 Religious Education Service Project, we are joining our Service Ministry Department to educate the RE children (grades K-8) about Operation Rice Bowl and Catholic Relief Services. Operation Rice Bowl ensures that CRS can continue to provide assistance to those in need in more than 100 countries.
The children will learn that through Christ's presence in the Eucharist, we are connected in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. During this season of Lent they will explore this connection through their participation in Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl.
Seventy Five percent of the monies collectecd will go to CRS to help farmers in Bolivia receive training to improve crop yields, children in Afghanistan gain more opportunities for quality education, communities in Ethiopia access reliable water sources even during times of drought, and fund many other vital projects. Twenty Five percent of the monies collected will remain in the Diocese of Joliet and support local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts.
Middle School Youth can bring in their money each EDGE session between January 24/25, 2010 and March 21/22, 2010. They can deposit their money into the container with their grade marked on it in the narthex of the church when they arrive. The grade with the most monies collected will win a prize!
