Habits of the Soul - Personal Reflection
"I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth." Genesis 9:14 This year Day 7 of Lent falls on Feb. 28th. Now that we are finally coming to the end of winter, we are in a period of great variability in regard to the weather. Some days it is quite frigid, and we may have occasional 'snow showers'. We still have to keep our hats, gloves and scarves handy because we never know when we may have to use them. * * * * * So it is with our Lenten journey and, on a larger scale, our journey through life. Lent is definitely not what most people would call a "pleasant" time. Lent always begins in a dark and frigid time of year. It is a time of fasting, penance and self-denial. About mid-way through Lent (and often mid-way through life), we may feel that we are not equipped to make the sacrifices necessary to successfully complete our journey. But if we persevere with our Lenten activities and penances, we will begin to experience a new and stronger "self". This new self holds fast to the idea that there is a rainbow waiting to break through the clouds, if only we can hang on until the storm has passed. But the greatest lesson that our Lenten journey can teach us is that, in the end, it is not important that we feel the warmth of the Sun everyday. What is important is realizing that, whether the skies are cloudy or bright, we feel good because we feel the warmth of the Son everyday!
